Cercis Canadensis: Eastern RedbudCercis canadensis, the eastern redbud, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree, native to eastern North America from southern Michigan south to central Mexico. It is the state tree of Oklahoma. On average it reaches 20-30 ft tall, often with a twisted trunk and wide spreading branches. The flowers are showy, light to dark magenta pink in color, 1⁄2 in long, appearing in clusters from spring to early summer, and are pollinated by long-tongued bees. The leaves are attractive to many species of caterpillars, and the flowers are edible to humans- they can be eaten fresh or fried. Native Americans consumed the flowers raw or boiled, and ate the seeds roasted.
