It is native to Oregon and California, and can grow up to 20 ft tall in Charparral areas. It is popular with birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. It is often visited by honeybees for its pollen. The scientific name, meaning thyrse-flower, refers to the compact, branched flower cluster; thyrsus is the name of the staff, adorned with leaves and berries, that belonged to Bacchus, the Greek god of wine.
