Notholithocarpus Densiflorus: Tanbark Oak Notholithocarpus densiflorus, commonly known as the tanoak or tanbark-oak, is a broadleaf tree native to the western United States. It can reach heights of 130 ft tall, and can have a trunk of 2-7 ft in diameter. The seed produced by the Tanbark Oak is an acorn very similar to an oak acorn, with a very hard, woody shell more like a hazelnut. Tanoak is one of the species most seriously affected by sudden oak death with high mortality reported over much of the species' range. The bark and nuts are rich in Tannin, which increase the shelf life of the nuts. For this reason they were actually preferred by native tribes to Quercus acorns. The Concow tribe call the nut hä’-hä, and the Hupa people use the acorns to make meal, from which they would make mush, bread, biscuits, pancakes, and cakes. They also roast the acorns and eat them. Roasted, the seeds can be used as a coffee substitute.
