Quercus Robur: Common Oak Quercus Robur is a species of flowering tree in the beech and oak family. It is native to most of Europe west of the Caucasus. The tree is widely cultivated in temperate regions and has escaped into the wild in scattered parts of China and North America. These oaks are long lived, and can grow to robust circumferences of up to 15-40 ft. Within its native range Quercus Robur is valued for its importance to insects and other wildlife. Numerous insects live on the leaves, buds, and in the acorns. Quercus Robur supports the highest biodiversity of insect herbivores of any British plant. Quercus robur is also planted for forestry, and produces a long-lasting and durable heartwood, much in demand for interior and furniture work.
