R-21 (GRAU index - 4K55, according to the classification of the US Defense Ministry and NATO - SS-N-5 Serb) - Soviet liquid-propellant single-stage ballistic missile of submarines (SLBM). As part of the D-4 missile system, it was part of the armament of submarines of projects 629A and 658M.
The development of the rocket was assigned to OKB-586 by M.K. Yangel by a decree of March 20, 1958. On March 17, 1959, the development was transferred to SKB-385 (chief designer V.P. Makeev). The D-4 rocket complex with the R-21 rocket was adopted by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of May 15, 1963. The complex with three launchers was armed with 14 Project 629A submarines and 7 Project 658M missile carriers. The last launches of R-21 missiles were made in 1982, and in 1989 the D-4 complex was decommissioned. During the operation, 228 launches of R-21 missiles were carried out, of which 193 were successful.
