The AIM-54 Phoenix missile is an air to air, long-range weapon which combined with the the AN/AWG-9 guidence radar allowed the simultaneous engagement of multiple independent enemy aircraft by one allied aircraft. These missiles were carried in clusters of up to six missiles at a time to allow the use of this capability. The Phoenix was used on the F-14 Tomcat fighters and now both the F-14 and the AIM-54 Phoenix are retired and no-longer in service. The AIM-54 was replaced with the AIM-120 AMRAAM employed on the F/A-18 Hornet and derivatives. Iran remains the only operator of the F-14 and the AIM-54 as they still retain some acquired in the 1970s before their revolution.
