It is intended to reward citizens for particularly outstanding services related to the strengthening of the Russian statehood, socio-economic development of the country, research activities, development of culture and art, outstanding sporting achievements, strengthening peace, friendship and cooperation between peoples, for a significant contribution to the strengthening of the country's defense capability.

The order has four degrees, I and II degrees has a sign and a star, III and IV degrees-only a sign. The model presents a star with a box and a certificate for the award.

The order For service to the Motherland In the armed Forces of the USSR is awarded to soldiers of the Soviet Army, Navy, border and internal troops of the armed forces of the USSR.

The order consists of three degrees: I, II, and III degrees. The highest degree of the order is the I degree. The model presents the III degree of the order c box and order book.
