The Type 74 is a main battle tank of the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. It was developed in the 1960s to the 1970s to replace the obsolete Type 61. Although it was obsolete by the time it entered production in 1974, it had many unique features, such as theheavily sloped turret and the hydropneumatic suspension that allowed it to lean in any direction or vary its clearance. It was armed with the Royal Ordnance L7 gun, with an indigenous mantlet and breech. It was powered by a 720 horsepower engine giving it a similar mobility to the Leopard 1. Multiple upgrades were made during its service such as a thermal vision device, side skirts and extra armour. It is still in service today, and due to its lighter weight it is able to be used across Japan unlike the newer Type 90, which could only be deployed in Hokkaido. It is being replaced by the more advanced Type 10, but is still in service today.
