HISTORICAL NOTE: HMS E40 was a British E class submarine launched by Palmer, Jarrow in 1916 and was completed by Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

In World War I, while patrolling Scandinavian waters, the E40 encountered a submarine. Immediately the submarine dives, but the captain was hit by shrapnel and had to be loaded; the hatch stuck and the vessel began to take on water, going straight to the bottom. After an hour, the air was bad; the captain was unconscious, and the first lieutenant asked the crew if he could use the remaining oxygen to try to submerge the submarine. The operation was successful and the E40 managed to return to Middlesbrough, where it was already reported missing. The captain survived. HMS E40 was sold on December, 1921.
