Description

A First World War ft 17 type tank. The FT-17 tank, also known as the Renault FT-17, was a French light tank that saw widespread use during World War I. It was designed in 1917 by French engineer Rodolphe Ernst-Metzmaier and manufactured by the French automaker Renault. The FT-17 was a small, two-man tank with a crew consisting of a driver and a commander/gunner. It weighed around 6.5 tons and was armed with either a 37mm cannon or a machine gun. The tank's distinctive design featured a fully rotating turret, which allowed the commander/gunner to engage targets in any direction. The FT-17's tracks were located on either side of the tank, and it was powered by a 4-cylinder gasoline engine that gave it a top speed of around 7 mph (11 km/h). The tank's armor was relatively thin, ranging from 8mm to 22mm in thickness, which made it vulnerable to heavier weapons. Despite its limitations, the FT-17 was a revolutionary design that set the standard for future tank development. Its fully rotating turret, small size, and relatively low weight made it highly maneuverable and effective in the trenches of World War I. It saw extensive use by the French Army and was also used by the British, American, and Russian forces during the war. After World War I, the FT-17 was exported to many countries and used in various conflicts around the world, including the Russian Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II. Its influence can be seen in many later tank designs, and it remains an iconic symbol of early 20th-century armored warfare.
