"Hail Caesar! We who are about to die salute you!" The murmillo gladiator was a heavyweight gladiator armed with a gladius short sword and a large scutum shield. The murmillo was in the scutarii class of gladiators; those who bore large shields, as opposed to the more lightly armed gladiators such as the Thracian and Retiarius. This model is faithfully recreated, to scale, from historical sources, secondary source analysis of archaeological evidence, and current historical doctrine regarding the arms and armour of the time.
