Let me present you the very unique type of sword which was widespread in Renaissance but is rarely remembered in comparison to rapier.
Sidesword appears at the end of the XV century and represents the development of arming sword toward greater protection of the hilt and is a transitional sword between medieval arming sword and 17 century rapier. Improved protection of the hand allowed more active use of the sword to parry and use a much larger arsenal of techniques than with the usual one-handed sword. Point of balance towards the hilt allowed more precise thrusting, however sidesword still had better cutting capabilities than rapier.
