In Cossack Ukraine, the pirnach was a sign of the power of kurin' atamans and colonels, it belonged to the kleinods — the honors and attributes of the authority of the Ukrainian Cossack chieftain

The custom of wearing it by Cossack officers was preserved until the beginning of the 20th century. It is known that the Cossack chieftains used the pirnach as a symbol of power during the National Liberation Struggle of 1917–1922
