The Celts were early masters of ironwork, and their elaborately crafted swords belie craftsmanship and reverence. Celtic swords were some of the longer swords of this time, a feat when iron was of poorer quality and forges were primitive. The craftsmanship required ensured that swords were an expensive status symbol, and thus many of the surviving swords show that they could be ornately decorated. The Celts seem to have favored leaf-bladed swords which emphasized a greater amount of mass near the striking tip of the blade, ensuring that it struck with the maximum amount of force to lay low the foe. A fitting sword for a warrior culture that emphasized heroic combat.
