The 12-pounder Napoleon was the most popular smooth-bore weapon of the war. It was named after Napoleon III and was prized for its safety, reliability and destructive power - especially over short distances. In federal artillery manuals, it was called the light 12-pounder gun to distinguish it from its longer and heavier counterpart, which was practically not used as a field one.
