Gun body is made of impact-resistant polymers, barrel and bolt guard are steel. It is equipped with a double-action trigger mechanism. Safety features include mechanical safety, automatic safety that locks mechanism when magazine is not fully inserted, and a locking mechanism that locks the bolt carrier, preventing firing and disassembly.
The P22 is similar in appearance to the earlier Walther P99, but is about one-quarter shorter. The pistol is equipped with interchangeable sights and grip pads to fit the gun to the hand of the shooter.
