A Late Roman helmet was discovered in Biberwier, Austria, near the ancient Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. The helmet is well-preserved despite its age of over 1600 years, probably due to the cold Tyrolean Alps. Archaeologists hypothesize that the helmet was in a bag tied to the saddle of a rider and was lost when the bag became untied and fell down the slope. The helmet’s owner was likely a Germanic mercenary in the service of the Roman army. The helmet has not yet received any scientific evaluation.
Source: It was first reported in a short Austrian Internet news article of 27.01.2006, later mentioned in a short note by museum curator Christian Miks accompanying the exhibition: Vom Prunkstück zum Altmetall. Ein Depot spätrömischer Helmteile aus Koblenz (26.9.-16.11.2008). There is no other information about it. The helmet has not yet received any scientific evaluation.
