Colored Abstractions collection. design Hervé Langlais, 2016. Hervé Langlais’ 2016 collection for Galerie Negropontes. After having explored rare materials, then the sculptural aspects of design in the vein of Brancusi and finally graphics, Hervé Langlais devotes to color his fourth collection Colored Abstractions for Galerie Negropontes. Hervé Langlais has chosen to highlight color by using pure geometric forms. Inspired by the artists of the geometric abstraction movement of the 1950s and 1960s, he uses the line as a structural base for his creations. From Josef Albers professor at Bauhaus and instigator of Op Art, Langlais retains the observation of the interaction between colors and the importance of perception. The eye is the driving force behind the work which flirts with the decorative, the playful and aspects of fashion. From Genevieve Claisse, Langlais retains the extreme simplicity of “transfigured” shapes through the intensity of the interaction of colors. His works allow for the transition from flat, pictorial references to his 3D vision. Thus the side tables and Nénuphar table use the circle. The square is represented in the Homage to the cube side tables, a direct reference to Josef Albers’ 1956 work Homage to the Squares. Again, it is present in the Triptych mirror composed of squares reflecting each other, a mise en abyme of this simple shape. In the same way, Hervé Langlais explores the triangle in the Bosphore console or Prism side tables. For this fourth collection, the designer was also inspired by Italy, and more particularly by its great luxury houses and jewellers. Prada and Marni showcase the same colorful eclecticism: Refined and audacious. With this in mind Langlais has chosen to dress his pieces using lacquer so as to magnify colors in a rich and shiny pallet; a veritable explosion for the senses. Associated with palm marquetry, this is a homage to the Art Deco movement. The technical difficulties encountered by creating such pieces showcase the excellence of the tradition of French decorative arts. Brass serves to transcend the pieces allowing for one color to flow into another. Reminiscent of crimping, each piece of furniture evokes jewelry. In this collection Hervé Langlais underlines the close link between art and craftsmanship, as well as the precious and polymorphic side of his creations
