Initially, the word sofa had nothing to do with upholstered furniture. This word of Arabic origin appeared at the beginning of the 16th century. It comes from the word divan - which meant write down, keep records. In the Middle Ages, in the East during the Ottoman Empire, the register of state documents was called “divan”. Gradually, this word was assigned to the premises in which documents were created, discussed and accepted by statesmen. The nobles were seated on low, long wooden benches, for the comfort of those sitting on them were spread out in a large number of pillows. On such benches, one could simply sit or recline - everything depended on the rank of the official. These benches, called sofas by analogy with the room where they were located, became the prototype of modern sofas. In Europe, the first soft sofas appeared in the 17th century and were intended for sitting, it was not accepted to lie on them. The salon furniture had graceful carved wooden legs and armrests. Sheep wool and horsehair served as a soft filler. The rhythm of modern life has made its own adjustments to the content and appearance of the apartment - new types of upholstered furniture have appeared, the task of which is to provide a comfortable sleeping place not only for the guest, but also for the owner for every day.
