I have been carving stone for most of my life now. I was taught by a great artist namedRené Lavaggi. He was a third generation stone carver. His grandfather Hugo worked on the Lincoln Memorial. René was a lover of life. He spoke a handful of languages, played the mandolin, classical guitar and was a great cook too. Sometimes after carving stone all day he would make the most delicious pasta with pesto. Then he and I, along with the rest of our carving group would sit around, drink wine, talk shop, and devour René’s wonderful food. René is gone now, though I think of him often, especially when I’m carving stone .
