The Clam chair was first designed in 1944 in Copenhagen by Danish upholsterer Arnold Madsen. In 1945 Arnold founded the furniture company Madsen & Schubell together with the cabinetmaker Henry Schubell in order to produce this unique chair that became known as the Muslingstol or Clam chair due to its’ unique shape. Arnold & Henry achieved great commercial success with the Clam chair in Denmark and then in 1953 signed the exclusive rights to Norwegian manufacturers Vik & Blindheim who continued production in Norway until the 1960s. Over the years the Clam chair has become one of the most misattributed and copied designs of the 20th Century. But now, thanks to extensive recent research the history of the Clam has finally been corrected to show Arnold Madsen as the one true designer.Example Shown: Honey Sheepskin + Fumed Oak with Cognac leather buttonsMeasures: Height: 82cm (32.3”)Depth: 80cm (31.5”)Width: 65cm (25.6”).
