The volcano is a part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park and includes other snowy peaks such as the Nevado del Tolima, Santa Isabel, El Cisne and Quindío, which are covered by glaciers that have been withdrawing significantly because of the global warming.

The park is a popular tourist destination and includes several shelters for tourists; but unfortunately nowdays closed to the public.

The slopes of the volcano are used for winter sports, and the Laguna del Otún, for trout fishing.

Also in the region are some spas with commercially operated thermal waters.

But on November the 13th of 1985, an small eruption triggered a huge lahar that buried the town of Armero in what was known as “Armero’s tragedy”, in which an estimated 25,000 deaths occurred, second most devastating volcanic eruption of the 20th century, after the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902.
