The building was originally constructed in 1897 as the main hall of the elementary school at Gakushuin (Yotsuya, Tokyo). It was later moved to Chiba prefecture and used as an auditorium for elementary and junior high schools before being designated as an Important Cultural Property and moved to its current location in Themepark Boso no Machi.
After the Meiji Restoration, Japan rapidly adopted western culture and many western-style buildings were built. However, in 1923, a major earthquake named the Great Kanto Earthquake hit Tokyo, which led to the almost complete abandonment of brick buildings in Japan. This building is also a wooden structure, with a colonial-style exterior and Corinthian columns with column caps, a design that was very much in vogue at the time.
The ceiling and floor joinery has also been modelled as much as possible, so that it can be used as a background even in black and white. The model integrates walls, window frames and pillars, so they can be easily used in cartoons by hiding them.
