Zaragoza is the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon in northeastern Spain. On the banks of the Ebro River in the very center of the city rises the Baroque Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar with numerous domes and a statue of the Virgin Mary. A large number of pilgrims gather here every year. A distinctive feature of the city is Mudéjar buildings, combining features of Gothic and Muslim architecture. These include the 11th-century Moorish Aljaferia Palace and the 12th-century San Salvador Cathedral.
