Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The royal tombs have been preserved in the 12th-century cathedral. The neoclassical Massimo Theater is famous for its opera productions. Also in the city center is the Palazzo Normanni, a royal palace from the 9th century, and the Palatine Chapel with Byzantine mosaics. Near the port you can stroll through the lively markets of Ballaro and Vucciria.
