Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is a densely populated metropolis on the west coast of India, the financial center and largest city in the country. On the seaside promenade of Mumbai rises the Gate of India - a basalt arch, erected by order of the government of British India in 1924. On the island of Gharapuri, a few kilometers away from the city, there are the Elephanta Caves, which are ancient temples carved in stone, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Mumbai is also known as the center of India's (Bollywood) film industry.
