The Bronx, New York, became part of the city in 1874. The Bronx is twice the size of Manhattan, but the population is almost the same. Geographically, the area is located in the northern part of the city, it is separated from Manhattan by the Harlem River. The area got its name in honor of Jonas Bronk, a Dutch captain from Sweden, who ruled the first settlement on the territory of New Holland in 1639. In the 70s, the Bronx was virtually uninhabited. High levels of poverty and unemployment have created problems with crime and drug addiction in the area
