Basel is a city on the Rhine River in northwestern Switzerland, close to the French and German borders. The heart of the medieval Old Town is the Market Square, where the 16th-century red sandstone town hall rises. You can admire the city from the observation deck of the 12th-century Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is also known for the fact that the Dutch humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, who lived in the 16th century, is buried here.
