The HEXEL - Triangulated Tileable Pixel - Concept

The HEXEL - Triangulated Tileable Pixel - Concept 3D model

Description

The HEXEL - Triangulated Tileable Pixel Concept.

The technique of Triangulation has us splitting a square, in turn perhaps halving the size of each [square] pixel. The hexagonal shape allows for [60 degree or 120 degree] tiling and fitting pairs of 3 base colors times 4 in a repeatable, most efficient tiling pattern possible. 2 uni colored triangles make up a single color square, 3 squares make a box shape.

The last and final image shows what the current problem is, the non balanced led color spacing results in fringing patternsbetween two colors because of the lack of linear placing. the Hexel topology balances and spaces out all led colors perfectly in line, allowing for more perfect spread or more efficient usage of space, perfect straight lines or built in screen anti aliasing, and results in possibly much better local contrasts display.

The perfect diagonal lines between led's will make it harder to spot straight lines, break up the patterns that our eyes appear trained for. This placing is like a built in anti aliasing, right into the screen. we avoid having straight lines as much as possible. Im sure a better distribution or topology might be possible, in this example i tried to spread the tri color pairs as much evenly as possible, but again, there might be better tiling patterns to fool the eye. in this concept model i tried to achieve a smaller pixel area, while trying to fit more pixels in a smaller area. these [12] triangulated tiles i call Hexels, in stead of pixels and they appear to go great with an array of micro lenses, example image included.

the substrate's shape allows for a centrally placed/printed [white][LED] light source to live in between all the radial triangular LED tiles, as well as allow for close connections, able to send/receive data from a grid. a single hexel can have 4 sets of 3 colors = 12 triangles.this central light, powers 12 triangles very locally, allowing for nice local dimming zones, built into the design.

we can also light any combination of two LED colors by lighting them both from between the two colored tiles at once.
