To help combat social exclusion, a cafe with robot waiters will soon open in Tokyo, Japan, which will be able to provide jobs for people with disabilities. People with no other job opportunities will control robotic waiters remotely.
The robots are called OriHime-D, reach a height of 1.2 meters and weigh about 20 kilograms. They are equipped with a camera and microphone and broadcast recording to a PC or tablet to the operator via the Network. The robot control system, among other things, is able to track eye movements, which allows people with late stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to use it.
The pilot program will run from November 26 to December 7, on weekdays. The creators of the robots - the company Ory Laboratory - plan to open a cafe with robotic waiters on an ongoing basis closer to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be held in Tokyo.
