The Griffin is an experimental Labor designed by Schaft to develop Labor components for military and civilian applications. The Griffin project is headed up by Utsumi and the Phantom's Kurosaki is second in command. The Labor is seen in two different types in the anime, a flight version in the TV series, which as it sounds is equipped with jets and wings to make the Griffin fly, and an Aqua unit as seen in the New OVA Series, which can make the Griffin into a submersible Labor. The Griffin is piloted by a young Indian boy named Bud Renard Harchand.

Although most Japanese reference books romanise the name of the Labor as Griffon, the actual name of the Labor should be Griffin. The Griffin Labor is often referred to as a creature with a eagle's head and wings and a lion's body (also specifically mentioned in the reference book Labor Graphix), which in mythology is a Griffin or the less commonly spelt Gryphon. A Griffon is a breed of dog. The head and wings of the Griffin Labor do indeed resemble the mythological creature, not a dog.
