Solman was vacationing on a remote Caribbean island on a warm summer day when guerrillas took over. Hearing that the kidnappers were discussing exactly how the ransom money would be divided, Solman was able to negotiate his release at a price in exchange for providing three other hostages within 24 hours. He accomplished the goal with nothing but money, charm, and the eloquence of only the most terrifying cult leaders. Struck by his lack of empathy for tourists and his skill in providing units of exchange (i.e. people), the guerrillas struck a deal with Solman. He, in turn, took the bull by the horns and negotiated for himself the largest percentage of the booty for the hostages.
