The Penguin (whose real name is Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot) is a fictional character, a supervillain who appears in comics published by DC Comics. He is known as one of Batman's oldest and most persistent enemies. Artist Bob Kane and Bill Finger introduced him in Detective Comics # 58 (December 1941) .1 The Penguin is a short, stocky man, known for his love of birds and his specialized high-tech umbrellas. As a mobster and thief, he is better known as the crime lord; his nightclub business provides cover for criminal activity, and Batman frequently uses him as a source of information about the criminal underworld. According to Bob Kane, the character was inspired by the then mascot of a cigarette advertisement Kool - a penguin with a top hat and cane. Finger believed that the image of high society gentlemen in tuxedos was reminiscent of emperor penguins.2
Unlike most of Batman's gallery of enemies, the Penguin is in control of his actions and perfectly sane, characteristics that help him maintain a unique relationship with the Dark Knight. His latest characterization depicts him as the owner of a nightclub, which is popular in the criminal world. Batman comes to tolerate his operations as long as the Penguin remains one of his informants. The enterprising Penguin often sells stolen property or arranges for prison release permits - of course, for a hefty price.
