Grogu was kept in a hideout operated by Nikto mercenaries on Arvala-7 during the New Republic Era, having survived the siege of the Jedi Temple decades ago. While still an infant at the age of fifty, he was sought, at the request of Moff Gideon, by an Imperial who hired a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Din Djarin to retrieve him.

However, Djarin chose not to leave Grogu with the Imperials and rescued him from the Imperial remnant facility. After attempting to hide with Grogu alongside the ends of the galaxy, Djarin returned to deal with the Imperials who were searching for Grogu, hoping to keep him safe. In the process, Grogu became a Mandalorian foundling and the only other member of the newly created Djarin clan. As a result, Djarin embarked on a new mission: deliver Grogu to the Jedi.
