In addition to family cars, Mercedes Benz also made sportsters, including the popular 540K, which was introduced in 1936. The 540K was the more powerful successor to the 500K. It was offered with different bodywork versions of which the Convertible B was by far the most popular variant. In terms of appearance, it was difficult to distinguish from the 500K, depending on variant and model year. 419 units were produced from 1936-1939. It featured 8-cylinders 5401cc, 115-horsepower (180 with Kompressor) @ 3400 RPM, 170 km/h top speed.
This version is notable as it was also produced under the designation W129, as an armoured version, which was ordered by the Reichskanzlei to be used as a German staff car for the army. Only 20 of these were built, and one is featured in the film Schindlers List.
