Igor Sikorski designed and developed this aircraft as one of the first successful passenger carrying commercial seaplanes. The S42 was an unpressurized, 4 engine seaplane with the wing mounted on a pylon above the hull and four radial engines driving tractor mounted propellers. The aircraft could carry 37 passengers and four crew or 14. These aircraft were used by Pan Am and became the first aircraft to visit the Hawaiian Islands. The last S42 was retired in 1946.
