The Rockwell Turbo Commander 690 is one of a family of Aero Commander 500 aircraft with twin-engine piston (reciprocating) propeller engines built by Rockwell International from 1967 through 1986. The aircraft is a utility and transport aircraft designed to carry executives, family members or charter and air taxi services passengers on short to medium flights. It was renamed the Shrike Commander after 1967. Many are still in service around the world. Some are being reconditioned to continue careers while others have been retired.
The US Army flew the commander as the U-9 and the US Air Force also flew them as the U-4. The United States Coast Guard and the NOAA both continue operating Commanders.
