The North American F-86 Sabre jet was a single seat transonic jet fighter of the United States Air Force. It had a swept wing, swept stabilizers and tail. It was the mainstay of the US Air Force air superiority fighters during the Korean War. It was the only fighter in the inventory at the time that could counter the MIG 17 flown by North Korea at the time of the Korean conflict. It had a single jet turbine engine and was very maneuverable. It was a very reliable aircraft and successful in combat. It had been designed and developed during the mid to late 1940s and production began in 1949. The success of this aircraft extended its production to 7800 aircraft between 1949 and 1956. The last operational F-86 fighters were finally retired by the Bolivian Air Force in 1994. More than 9800 examples were built by all manufacturers in the US, Canada and Australia and it became the most prolific jet fighter in the history of the west.
