The Douglas C-47 Skytrain was also known as the Goonybird, Skytrooper and Dakota. It was developed from the Civilian Douglas DC-3. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II to ferry cargo and personnel all over the world, to carry paratroopers, tow gliders, and for logistical and utility uses. The aircraft could carry up to 28 troops plus a pilot, co-pilot, navigator and radio operator. A cargo master was also employed in many operations. They were powered by Pratt and Whitney R1830-901C Twin Wasp 14 cylinder radial engines driving 3 bladed variable pitch propellers. The landing gear were retractable and in could operate from rough fields. They were used by every allied service during World War II. They continue to serve in many military and civilian operations around the world to this day. Recently a turboprop conversion has been accomplished to add even more lifespan to these enduring aircraft.
