The Xi’an H-6 bomber is one of the backbones of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), China’s aerial service branch, which was established in November 1949. While the PLAAF introduced the H-6 in the 1960s, it has remained in active service to this day. In 1958 the Soviet Union delivered the Tu-16 to China, and shortly after, the Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation (XAC) began a licensed production of the aircraft. The company designated it as the H-6, which flew for the first time in 1959. The first domestically built H-6 was produced in 1968.
