Perfect for use in games and simulation projects.
The EC-130J Commando Solo is a highly specialized variant of the C-130J Super Hercules, designed to execute psychological operations (PSYOP) and civil affairs broadcast missions by transmitting radio and television broadcasts over a wide range of frequencies. These broadcasts can be used to disseminate information, influence foreign audiences, counter enemy propaganda, or provide emergency messaging during humanitarian crises. The aircraft is equipped to transmit across AM, FM, HF (High Frequency), UHF (Ultra High Frequency), VHF (Very High Frequency), and military communication bands, as well as television signals. It is capable of broadcasting in both analog and digital formats, allowing it to reach target audiences across different regions and technological infrastructures.
Missions are flown at high altitudes to optimize signal coverage and propagation patterns, ensuring that broadcasts reach a broad and strategically relevant audience. The EC-130J is air-refuelable, significantly extending its loiter time and operational range. It is designed to function both day and night, in varied weather conditions, and in both permissive and contested environments. During a mission, the EC-130J typically flies in an offset orbit from the intended target area, allowing for continuous broadcasting while maintaining a safe distance. The aircraft can engage both military and civilian populations, broadcasting messages that support military psychological operations by demoralizing enemy troops or encouraging defection, deliver emergency messages during humanitarian missions or disaster relief efforts, counter enemy propaganda by providing alternative narratives and information, and encourage local populations to cooperate with allied forces or support stability efforts.
The EC-130J Commando Solo is operated exclusively by the 193d Special Operations Wing (193 SOW) of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, which is under the operational command of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The aircraft is based at Harrisburg Air National Guard Base, located at Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown, Pennsylvania, formerly known as Olmstead Air Force Base. The 193 SOW has been conducting airborne information operations for decades, playing a crucial role in both combat and humanitarian missions worldwide.
The Commando Solo has played a significant role in various U.S. military operations, including Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989, where it was used to broadcast messages to Panamanian forces and civilians, and Operation Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991, where it delivered messages to Iraqi troops urging surrender. It has also been used in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom to broadcast messages to local populations and enemy forces, as well as in humanitarian missions, providing emergency broadcasting services in disaster-stricken areas. With its unique capability to influence and inform from the air, the EC-130J Commando Solo remains a critical asset in modern information warfare and psychological operations.
