Daima was originally going to be an anime-original series without any input from Akira Toriyama, however after giving advice here and there, Toriyama ended up becoming majorly involved; creating the story, world, characters, mechs, and all sorts of other things.[6][7]

Akira Toriyama handled the story and settings, as well as many of the designs.[1][8][9][7]

Daima is a made-up term, which would translate to Evil in English.[1] However, the kanji used for Daima (大魔) mean great and demon/magic.[10][8][9] The series' name is primarily displayed as ドラゴンボールDaima(ダイマ) by official sources, using katakana for Daima rather than the kanji Toriyama gave.[11][7]

Akio Iyoku confirmed Dragon Ball Daima would feature a completely original story.[12]

On February 10, 2025, Akio Iyoku stated in an interview that it took six years to develop Dragon Ball Daima starting on parallel to the work on Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The show was developed with the intent of it being watched by children and parents, with the decision of turning Goku back into a child being because the parents would likely have been watching Dragon Ball GT when they were younger. Toriyama's involvement was intended to be minimal, but he ended up creating most of Daima; with the anime being a continuation of and strongly connected to the original manga's Majin Buu Saga. While originally it was intended just for Goku to become a child again, Toriyama changed it after he became involved, so the entire cast was affected. More time was spent developing Daima than the prior films. Iyoku believes that pointy-eared people originating from the Demon Realm was something Toriyama had in mind for a while but had never had a chance to implement prior
