The Maschinenpistole 43, Maschinenpistole 44 and Sturmgewehr 44 (MP 43, MP 44 and StG 44, respectively) were the names of a light assault rifle developed by Germany during World War II as part of the Maschinenkarabiner (machine gun) program, and evolving from the Mkb 42(H). This variety of names for the successor to Mkb 42(H) was the result of complications in the Third Reich bureaucracy.
