The Leaning Tower is actually the bell tower for the Pisa Cathedral. It began to tilt due to the fact that the foundations were built on unsuitable ground, unable to support the weight of the structure. The tilt of the tower became more and more pronounced over the years, which has led to there being many attempts at restoring the structure to a fully upright position. Unfortunately, many of these proved unsuccessful at first, with some even making the tilt worse! Following an eleven year closure to the public from 1990 to 2001, the tower was reopened as a team of mathematicians, engineers and historians worked to correct the tilt and prevent the tower from collapsing. Their efforts have proved successful, with the tower now stabilized to the extent that it no longer moves for the first time in its history!
